A powerplay is a set of overs during which the fielding side must keep a set number of fielders inside the fielding circle. The playing conditions set the overs and the number of fielders.

Some formats add a batting powerplay the batting side chooses. The scorer marks the start and end of every powerplay in the book.

Questions scorers actually ask

01 Who decides the powerplay overs?
The playing conditions set them, and the umpires confirm on the day.
02 Does the powerplay change how a batter can be out?
No. It changes fielding restrictions, not the dismissal rules.
