DLS is the method most competitions use when rain shortens a limited-overs match. It estimates how many runs a side still had available, measured in wickets and overs, and sets a revised target from that.
It is not a simple cut of runs per over. A team with more wickets in hand has more resources left, and the revised target reflects that. The official tool named in the playing conditions gives the result. A teaching calculator can explain the method but cannot replace it.
Match questions
Questions scorers actually ask
- 01 Is DLS used in every match?
- Only where the playing conditions name it. Many club leagues use a simpler rule.
- 02 Who sets the revised target?
- The official DLS tool or the umpires, using the figures the book records at the stoppage.
